Best Afghan Knitting Patterns
Afghan knitting patterns are highly sought after by beginner and experienced knitters alike. It is easy to see why it is so popular. An expertly knitted afghan can stay in a family for decades. And it is beautiful.
What is an afghan?
An Afghan is a type of blanket that is crocheted or knitted. It is the kind of blanket that is folded at the foot end of granny’s bed, or it’s thrown over a rocking chair for decoration. It is soft, warm and comfortable, and is often passed down as heirlooms, or given as gifts.
Why do we call it an afghan?
The word comes from the country Afghanistan, and means a person from Afghanistan. The type of blanket was originally made by the Afghans, and first used in 1877 by Thomas Caw. (according to Wikipedia)
Types and styles
There are different types of afghan; you get a motif afghan, where you create a design, usually in a small square called a “granny Square.” These are usually crocheted, but can be knitted too. This could be many different designs, or just one, and they are joined together to form one blanket. This is the most popular style as it is easy to make a small square, which you can often do in one sitting.
You also get a mile-a-minute afghan which is made in one piece, and not using many different types of stitches and designs. This is the most popular afghan for beginners as it is easy to make.
A join-as-you-go afghan is made up of many different, larger pieces, sometimes in different designs.

Afghans are also sometimes named blankets or throws. But there’s a slight difference between each:
A blanket is usually used as a bed covering and provides warmth in winter. Blankets are usually thick and made from fabrics such as cotton, polyester, or rayon, or blends of those fabrics. They’re usually not hand made.
A throw is smaller than a blanket but, instead of covering a bed, it is usually used in family rooms and living rooms. It is usually thrown over a chair or couch, and is there to protect the couch, or to cover its age. It is used to decorate.
The afghan is usually made by hand and either knitted or crocheted. It has patterns, and sometimes uses more than one color.
The name “Afghan” is usually only used in the United States. In the United Kingdom, and other countries where English is spoken, afghans are usually referred to as blankets. The qualifying terms “granny blankets” or “baby blankets” are used instead of the name “Afghan.”
You will need a Knitting and Crochet Kit for these afghan knitting patterns if you don’t have it already.
